Interview at TVR1 – theme: Urban mobility and traffic the next challenger
Car traffic in Cluj-Napoca is getting slower, according to recent measurements carried out by specialists from the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca (UTCN). On short routes in the city, the average speed of a car has dropped to 10-15 kilometers per hour, according to a study coordinated by Nicolae Filip, dean of the Faculty of Automotive, Mechatronics and Mechanical Engineering. “We made measurements and found that the speed of a car is decreasing, reaching 10-15 km”, Filip told TVR Cluj
In contrast, the speed of public transport, especially on routes with dedicated bus lanes, is increasing. If 10 years ago buses and trolleybuses were traveling at an average speed of 15 km/h, the introduction of dedicated lanes has allowed for a significant improvement in their flow.
Will more and more Cluj residents give up their cars? “It would be desirable and I am convinced that many would like to use public transport. The problem is that there are limitations in terms of the coverage of the public transport network. We have many new areas, and their connection to the urban network is still weak, not at the level of real demand” added Nicolae Filip.
